Texas Motorcycle License Practice Test and Study Guide

Prepare for Texas motorcycle licensing with 100 original practice questions based on current official Texas guidance. The question bank covers traffic rules, lane use, right-of-way, hazard response, protective gear, motorcycle controls, visibility, riding technique, passengers and cargo, and group riding. Texas licensing requirements depend on age and on the license an applicant already holds, so the guide below separates the rules that apply to minors, adults, and applicants who may qualify for a skills-test waiver. The practice format uses four answer choices for study convenience and does not claim to reproduce the number, wording, or format of questions on an official Texas examination. Always confirm your own eligibility and appointment requirements with Texas DPS before applying.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Complete the required motorcycle safety course

Texas DPS requires motorcycle applicants to complete a motorcycle safety course approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The course completion certificate, identified by DPS as MSB-8 or MSB-R, is valid for 24 months. Presenting proof of successful course completion allows DPS to waive the motorcycle knowledge test. Keep the certificate available for the licensing transaction and do not assume that course completion automatically waives every other test, because the skills-test rule depends on the applicant's age and current Texas license.

02

Prepare your application and identity documents

For an original Texas driver license transaction, DPS instructs applicants to complete the application and provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, Texas residency, and identity. The general application process also includes biometric information, a photograph, the required fee, and a vision examination. Motorcycle applicants must also satisfy REAL ID requirements and provide the motorcycle-course documentation required for Class M. Document combinations vary by applicant, so use the DPS document and identity guidance rather than relying on a generic checklist that may not fit your circumstances.

03

Know when a motorcycle skills test is required

All Texas motorcycle applicants under age 18 must pass a DPS motorcycle skills test. For adults, DPS may waive the skills test when the applicant is at least 18, holds a valid unrestricted Texas Class A, B, or C driver license, and has completed the approved motorcycle safety course. Adults without that qualifying Texas license generally must take the skills test. Applicants who must test should review the current DPS page before the appointment because vehicle, accompanying-driver, and Impact Texas Drivers documentation requirements can apply.

04

Use the practice bank as a study tool

The 100 questions in this bank sample the safety and traffic topics represented in the saved Texas motorcycle study set. Use explanations to review why an answer is correct, then return to the official Texas materials when a rule involves age, licensing status, or a specific exception. The practice bank is not an official DPS exam and does not guarantee a passing result. Texas DPS determines which examinations apply to an individual applicant, and the approved motorcycle course can change the testing path by allowing the Class M knowledge test to be waived.

REQUIREMENTS OVERVIEW

Texas Motorcycle requirements

Requirements depend on the applicant and can change. Verify each item with the cited agency.

age

Texas motorcycle applicants, especially ages 15-17 and adults age 18 or older

Applicants ages 15-17 have additional minor requirements, and all applicants under 18 must pass a DPS motorcycle skills test. Adults age 18 or older may qualify for a skills-test waiver when they hold a valid unrestricted Texas Class A, B, or C license and complete the approved motorcycle safety course.

documents

Applicants completing an original Texas driver license or Class M transaction

DPS requires the driver license application and documentation for citizenship or lawful presence, Texas residency, and identity; the general application process also requires biometric information and a photograph. Motorcycle applicants must provide the applicable TDLR-approved motorcycle course completion certificate and meet REAL ID requirements.

tests

Texas motorcycle applicants

Completing a TDLR-approved motorcycle safety course allows DPS to waive the motorcycle knowledge test. A motorcycle skills test is mandatory for applicants under 18 and for adults who do not meet a listed waiver condition; the general driver license process also includes a vision examination.

passing

Applicants for whom a DPS examination or approved course requirement applies

The licensing path requires successful completion of the approved motorcycle safety course and successful completion of any DPS examinations that are not waived for the applicant. The motorcycle course certificate permits waiver of the Class M knowledge test, while applicants who are required to take the motorcycle skills test must pass that test.

applicability

Texas Class M applicants with different ages and existing license status

Motorcycle licensing requirements are not identical for every applicant. Minors have additional education and enrollment requirements; adults with a valid unrestricted Texas Class A, B, or C license may qualify for a skills-test waiver after the approved motorcycle course, while adults without that qualifying Texas license generally must take the skills test.
