Texas Class A CDL Practice Questions

This Texas Class A CDL practice set contains 100 original English-language questions built from the current saved question bank. It covers general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicles, hazardous materials, tank vehicles, doubles and triples, passenger vehicles, and school buses. The mix is broader than the tests every individual applicant will take: endorsements and vehicle-specific modules apply only when the intended operation requires them. Texas DPS requires the appropriate knowledge tests before a CDL skills test, and beginning June 1, 2026, Texas CDL and CLP knowledge examinations are administered in English only. Use the explanations to review safety concepts and verify your own license, endorsement, medical, and training requirements with Texas DPS before testing.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Know what Class A covers

Texas defines a Class A CDL for combinations with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more when the towed vehicle or vehicles exceed 10,000 pounds GVWR. A Class A license establishes the vehicle class, but it does not automatically supply every endorsement. Passenger, school bus, hazardous materials, tank, or doubles/triples authority depends on the operation and may require additional testing or training. This mixed practice page therefore includes scenario-specific modules for study breadth rather than implying that every Class A applicant takes every endorsement test.

02

Build the CLP and testing sequence

For a first Texas CDL, an upgrade to Class A, or certain endorsement additions, obtain the appropriate commercial learner permit and hold it for at least 14 days before the skills test. Texas lists the knowledge-test order as Texas Commercial Rules, General Knowledge, Combination for Class A, Air Brake when applicable, and endorsements. After the required waiting period and applicable entry-level driver training, the driving test includes vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and a road test. Since June 1, 2026, Texas CDL and CLP knowledge examinations are administered in English only and interpreters are prohibited for those exams.

03

Prepare documents and medical status

Before visiting a Texas driver license office for a CLP, review the current DPS checklist. Applicants generally need the CDL application, identity and citizenship or lawful-presence evidence, a Social Security number, the appropriate self-certification, and a medical examiner certification when their operating category requires one. Texas now receives medical certification information electronically through the National Registry II process, and as of April 10, 2026, Texas no longer accepts paper medical certificates. Medical and self-certification requirements vary with interstate or intrastate and excepted or non-excepted operation, so confirm the category that matches the work you will actually perform.

04

Use the practice bank as a review tool

The 100 questions on this page use four answer choices because that is the site practice format, not a statement about the number or format of questions on a Texas examination. Review missed answers by module, then return to the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Handbook and the relevant DPS or FMCSA guidance. Pay special attention to vehicle inspection, air-brake and combination procedures, cargo and hazard control, and any endorsement that matches your intended vehicle or load. Passing the required knowledge tests is only one step; issuance also depends on the applicable documentation, CLP period, training, and skills-testing requirements.

For Class A, Texas identifies Commercial Rules, General Knowledge, Combination, Air Brake when applicable, and any required endorsement knowledge tests. The CDL driving test includes vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and a road test. Knowledge examinations are in English only as of June 1, 2026.

Applicants seeking issuance of a Texas Class A CDL.

Applicants must successfully complete the knowledge tests that apply to their license and endorsements, then pass the required CDL driving-test components after satisfying the CLP holding period and applicable training requirements. This page does not state an unsupported numeric passing score.

applicability

First-time Class A applicants, Class B holders upgrading to Class A, and applicants adding specific endorsements.

FMCSA ELDT requirements apply to first-time Class A or Class B applicants, Class B-to-A upgrades, and first-time S, P, or H endorsements, subject to listed exceptions. Texas Class A authority does not itself replace endorsements required for particular passenger, school-bus, hazardous-materials, tank, or doubles/triples operations.
