02Choose the permit path that matches your age
Applicants under 18 use Rhode Island's graduated licensing path. A Limited Instruction Permit is available from age 16 to under 18 after the required certified 33-hour driver-education course, and the permit generally must be held six months before the road test. Applicants age 18 or older who have never held a Rhode Island license, or whose license has been expired more than five years, begin with the computerized knowledge exam for an instruction permit; driver education is not required for this adult permit path.
03Prepare for the knowledge exam and required documents
The DMV administers the computerized knowledge exam at its Cranston headquarters by reservation. Applicants should study the entire Rhode Island Driver's Manual and bring the completed License/ID/Permit Application plus the required identity, Social Security, residency, and other documents that apply to the transaction. If an applicant fails the knowledge exam, Rhode Island DMV requires a wait of at least eight days before another attempt.
04Build driving experience before the road test
For applicants under 18, the DMV requires at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving, including at least 10 hours at night, with the required affidavit, and the learner permit must generally be held at least six months before the road test. An applicant age 18 or older becomes eligible for the road test after holding the learner permit for 30 days. Regardless of age, practice stopping position, lane selection, signaling, observation, hazard recognition, backing, turning, and safe responses to other drivers.
05Bring a compliant vehicle and pass the driver skills test
A first Rhode Island operator license requires successfully completing the road test. The DMV requires the original learner permit and specified vehicle documentation, including registration and insurance, and the test vehicle must satisfy the listed safety and equipment rules. The skills test can be terminated for a collision, traffic violation, dangerous action, leaving the designated roadway, equipment failure, erratic operation, or other listed conditions. After a failed driver skills test, the DMV requires a wait of at least 30 days before retesting.
