Ohio Car Permit Practice Questions and Driver License Guide

This Ohio car practice page is based on the 100 questions currently saved in the bank. The set covers signs and signals, right-of-way, lane use and passing, turning and parking, speed and following distance, hazardous conditions, sharing the road, impaired or distracted driving, emergencies and collisions, and licensing responsibilities. Each practice item uses four answer choices with one correct answer as an editorial study format; it is not a claim that the official Ohio knowledge test uses this 100-question layout. Ohio BMV currently uses a 40-question knowledge test with a 75 percent passing score for the temporary instruction permit process. The steps after the permit depend on age, with separate training rules for applicants under 18, ages 18 through 20, and applicants over 21.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Begin with the TIPIC knowledge and vision requirements

Ohio starts the ordinary temporary permit process at age 15 years and six months. Applicants may take the knowledge test online or use an authorized in-person location, with vision screening completed as required before the TIPIC is issued. The BMV knowledge test contains 40 multiple-choice questions on motor-vehicle regulations and traffic signs, and a score of 75 percent is required. For in-person testing, the BMV directs applicants to bring acceptable proof of full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number if one has been assigned.

02

Prepare the document set for the credential you will receive

Passing the knowledge and vision steps does not by itself complete issuance. To purchase a TIPIC, the BMV lists proof of full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number if assigned, Ohio residency, and citizenship or legal presence. Ohio also distinguishes Standard and federally compliant credentials. The Acceptable Documents page explains that both card types require identity and legal-presence evidence, while the compliant card requires two documents from different sources for the Ohio street address. Applicants should use the current BMV checklist for the credential type they select.

03

Match driver training to the applicant’s age

Applicants under 18 must complete a licensed driver-education course with 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of driving, complete 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 at night, hold the TIPIC for at least six months, and pass the driving and skills tests. Applicants ages 18 through 20 must also complete the 24-hour course, 8 hours of driving instruction, and 50 supervised hours including 10 at night before the driving and skills tests, but the BMV section for this age group does not state the same six-month TIPIC holding requirement. Applicants over 21 follow the adult permit and testing process and generally face abbreviated adult training after a first failed driving-test attempt rather than the younger-driver training package.

04

Use the 100-question bank as broad preparation, not an exam blueprint

The saved practice bank contains 100 questions distributed across ten study topics, so it is intentionally broader than one official Ohio knowledge-test session. The BMV says the official knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions and requires 75 percent correct. After the TIPIC stage, a driver must satisfy the age-appropriate training requirements and pass the driving and skills tests before purchasing the driver license. Use the practice set to identify weak subjects, then review the corresponding Ohio BMV material rather than assuming the practice topic mix predicts the exact composition of an official test.
