North Carolina Motorcycle Practice Questions and Endorsement Guide

This North Carolina motorcycle practice page reflects the 100 questions currently saved in the bank. The set covers signs and signals, right-of-way, lane use and passing, turning and parking, speed and following distance, hazardous conditions, sharing the road, impairment, emergencies, licensing responsibilities, protective gear, motorcycle controls, rider visibility, riding techniques, passengers and cargo, and group riding. Each item uses four choices with one correct answer as an editorial study format, not as a representation of every official NCDMV test screen. North Carolina riders should use the current NCDMV motorcycle page and Motorcyclists’ Handbook together: the page explains permit and endorsement requirements, while the handbook supplies the riding-safety material practiced throughout this bank. Applicants under 18 have additional consent and approved-course requirements.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Know which motorcycle credential you need

North Carolina requires a motorcycle learner permit or a motorcycle endorsement on a provisional, regular, or commercial driver license before operating a motorcycle on public roads. The learner permit is optional for a rider who is pursuing the endorsement directly, but it provides a legal way to practice before full endorsement privileges. NCDMV says a motorcycle learner-permit applicant must already hold a full provisional, regular, or commercial driver license. This practice bank therefore treats motorcycle licensing as an added privilege connected to an underlying driver license rather than as a stand-alone first driving credential.

02

Prepare for the learner-permit tests

For the motorcycle learner permit, NCDMV lists a motorcycle knowledge test, road sign identification test, and vision test. The current motorcycle page requires applicants to pass those tests but does not publish a numeric motorcycle knowledge-test passing score, so this page does not invent one. NCDMV also states that motorcycle learner permits are issued for 12 months and may be renewed once for six months. The 100-question practice bank is broader than one official test session and includes both general road strategy and motorcycle-specific safety topics.

03

Follow the extra rules for riders 16 through 18

NCDMV states that applicants ages 16 through 18 who hold a full provisional license need signed parental or guardian consent and must successfully complete an approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation or North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program course. Those requirements are specific to younger applicants and should not be generalized to every adult applicant. Riders should confirm that their underlying provisional license and course documentation are current before applying for the motorcycle learner permit or endorsement.

04

Use approved training and protective equipment

NCDMV says successful completion of an approved motorcycle safety course, or presentation of an accepted waiver, can remove the need to take the motorcycle skills test at NCDMV. The agency also requires every motorcycle operator and passenger to wear a motorcycle safety helmet that complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218. The Motorcyclists’ Handbook expands on safe braking, cornering, visibility, emergency maneuvers, passenger and cargo handling, group riding, protective clothing, alcohol, fatigue, and mechanical problems; those subjects form the core of this practice bank.

NCDMV lists a motorcycle knowledge test, road sign identification test, and vision test for the motorcycle learner permit. Riders who do not qualify through an approved safety-course completion or accepted waiver may also need the motorcycle skills test for the endorsement.

North Carolina motorcycle applicants completing required examinations or approved training

NCDMV requires applicants to pass the required motorcycle, road-sign, and vision tests and to successfully complete any approved course used for the younger-rider requirement or skills-test waiver.
