Confirm that Class A matches the combination vehicle you plan to operate

North Carolina requires Commercial Class A for a combination with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more when the vehicle or vehicles being towed have a GVWR over 10,000 pounds. NCDMV requires CDL applicants to be at least 18 and to already possess a valid Class A, B, or C driver license that is not suspended, disqualified, or revoked. The exact knowledge tests and endorsements depend on the vehicle and operation, so air-brake, tank, doubles/triples, hazardous-materials, passenger, and school-bus material in this bank is conditional study coverage rather than one required test package for every Class A applicant.

Prepare the CLP application, commerce certification, and medical status

NCDMV lists identity, Social Security number, residency or legal-presence evidence, and North Carolina liability-insurance proof among the documents used for a commercial learner permit application. CDL and CLP holders also self-certify the type of commercial operation they perform. Non-excepted interstate and non-excepted intrastate drivers must maintain certified medical status. Since June 28, 2025, North Carolina no longer accepts paper Medical Examiner Certificates directly from commercial drivers; the medical examiner must transmit the certificate electronically through the FMCSA National Registry system.

Move from knowledge testing and the CLP to the Class A skills test

NCDMV requires the applicable CDL knowledge tests to obtain the commercial learner permit. The North Carolina Commercial Driver License Manual states that 80 percent of the questions on each knowledge test must be answered correctly to pass. After the CLP is issued, the applicant must hold it for at least 14 days before taking the skills test. First-time Class A applicants subject to Entry-Level Driver Training must complete the required theory and behind-the-wheel training with a registered provider before the Class A skills test. The skills test uses a representative vehicle for the class sought.

Use specialty modules only when the endorsement or vehicle makes them relevant
