LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Match the motorcycle endorsement to the motorcycle size

New Mexico uses motorcycle endorsements identified as W, Y, and Z. MVD describes W for motorcycles of 100cc or more, Y for 50cc through less than 100cc, and Z for less than 50cc. A valid driver license or permit of any class may be used to operate a moped without a motorcycle endorsement. Because the rider-course and road-test waiver must match the motorcycle on which the applicant qualified, make sure the endorsement sought matches the motorcycle size before choosing a training or testing route.

02

Use the age and rider-course path that applies to you

MVD states that a person age 13 or older who satisfactorily completes the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course offered through the New Mexico Motorcycle Safety Program may be issued a motorcycle license with a Y or Z endorsement. For older applicants, MVD also describes motorcycle endorsement and licensing routes using the Basic Rider Course or MVD testing. The course-completion certificate can waive the road test only when the endorsement requested is consistent with the motorcycle used for qualification. Riders under 18 are subject to New Mexico helmet requirements, and an initial licensee under 18 may not carry a passenger.

03

Bring the documents required for the underlying New Mexico credential

Motorcycle authority is added to or issued through a New Mexico driver credential, so applicants should check the current MVD document list for the credential they are applying for. MVD currently says a first-time REAL ID driver license requires one proof of identification number, one proof of identity, and two proofs of New Mexico residency. A first-time Standard Driver License requires one proof of identity and age plus two proofs of New Mexico residency. MVD says documents must be originals, and acceptable-document details vary by credential type and individual circumstances.

04

Know the permit and testing restrictions before riding

A New Mexico motorcycle instruction-permit holder may not carry a passenger. MVD states that a Basic Rider Course completion certificate can waive the motorcycle road test only for a matching endorsement; applicants who do not qualify for that waiver must complete the applicable MVD testing path. The official New Mexico Driver Manual remains the main study reference for safe motorcycle operation, including braking, lane position, visibility, night riding, intersections, passengers, group riding, and emergency control. Use the practice bank as review material, but rely on MVD for the current licensing transaction and test requirements that apply to your age and credential.

age

New Mexico motorcycle applicants age 13 and older using the approved Basic Rider Course path

MVD states that a person age 13 or older who satisfactorily completes the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course may be issued a motorcycle license with a Y or Z endorsement; additional age-based paths apply for other endorsements and credentials.

First-time applicants for the New Mexico driver credential used for motorcycle licensing

MVD currently lists one proof of identification number, one proof of identity, and two proofs of New Mexico residency for a first-time REAL ID driver license; a first-time Standard Driver License requires one proof of identity and age and two proofs of New Mexico residency, with original documents required.

MVD identifies W for motorcycles of 100cc or more, Y for 50cc through less than 100cc, and Z for less than 50cc; a valid license or permit of any class may operate a moped without a motorcycle endorsement.
