01Start with the permit and identity requirements
New Jersey's MVC directs first-time applicants to obtain an initial permit, bring the required documents, and then complete the knowledge and vision testing steps. The MVC's 6 Points of ID page says a Standard or REAL ID transaction requires proof of age and identity under the 6 Points system, New Jersey residency evidence, a Social Security number, ITIN, or affidavit, and the BA-208 application form. A Standard credential uses one proof of residency, while REAL ID uses two. Applicants should use the MVC document selector or current checklist before an appointment because document combinations and credential choices matter.
02Know the testing sequence and passing standard
After the permit step, the MVC requires a knowledge test and vision test before supervised practice proceeds. Current MVC materials state that the basic written knowledge test requires 80 percent, which is 40 correct answers out of 50. The 100 questions on this page are therefore a broader practice bank, not a reproduction of the official exam length or official questions. The First Driver License page says an applicant who fails the knowledge test may retest after seven days. Once the knowledge and vision requirements are satisfied, the permit can be validated for the supervised-driving stage.
03Complete the supervised-driving period that applies to you
For GDL applicants under age 21, MVC guidance requires at least six months of supervised driving before the road test. Those under 21 must also complete at least 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours during darkness, with the required certification presented at licensure. For GDL applicants age 21 or older, the supervised-practice period is at least three months. MVC's road-test page separately lists a minimum 20-day supervised-driving period for Non-GDL applicants. Because the applicable path depends on age and licensing status, use the MVC instructions for your own permit rather than applying another applicant's timeline to yourself.
04Prepare for the road test and what comes next
The basic road test evaluates practical skills such as reversing, stopping properly, approaching intersections, turning around, steering, parallel parking, and yielding the right-of-way. MVC requires an appointment and specifies documents, an eligible accompanying driver, and a suitable registered and insured vehicle; the examiner must be able to reach the foot brake or parking brake. Drivers under 21 must have the required red reflective plate decals on the test vehicle. If the road test is failed, MVC requires a wait of at least 14 days before another attempt. After a passing road test, first-time drivers continue to the probationary-license stage and later satisfy the requirements to upgrade to a basic license.
