01Start with the Montana motorcycle endorsement path
Montana requires a motorcycle endorsement to operate a motorcycle or motor scooter on public roads. The official motorcycle manual says an applicant must hold or obtain a valid Montana driver license and generally be at least 16 years old, or may qualify at age 15 after passing an approved driver education course. The endorsement is added to the underlying driver license, so applicants should make sure that license is valid and that any age-specific licensing conditions have been satisfied before scheduling motorcycle testing.
02Bring the documents needed for the underlying Montana license
A motorcycle endorsement is attached to a Montana driver license. First-time Montana driver-license applicants must therefore meet the document rules for the underlying credential. MVD currently requires proof of identity, Montana residency, and authorized presence. Applicants do not need to present a Social Security card or other proof of the number, but they must know their Social Security number so MVD can verify it electronically. Name-change documentation is needed when the documents do not show the applicant’s current legal name.
03Prepare for the written and driving tests
Montana MVD directs motorcycle endorsement applicants to pass the written test first and then schedule the driving test. The current Motorcycle Driver Manual is the principal study reference for the written test and covers protective gear, motorcycle controls, lane position, visibility, braking, curves, hazardous surfaces, passengers and cargo, group riding, impairment, and crash avoidance. Road skill testing is weather dependent, and MVD says motorcycle road tests are not given on wet roads.
04Understand the learner license and MSF waiver
The Montana motorcycle manual states that passing the written test results in a motorcycle learner license that allows operation of a motor-driven cycle under the immediate supervision of a responsible licensed driver who holds a valid motor-driven-cycle license. The manual describes that learner license as valid for one year from the knowledge-test date. Montana MVD also says successful completion of a Montana-approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course may waive the driving test when the applicant presents the MSF card.
05Use the saved 100-question bank by topic
The saved bank contains 100 practice questions across sixteen topics. Ten questions each cover protective gear, motorcycle controls, rider visibility, riding techniques, passengers and cargo, and group riding. Four questions each cover signs and signals, right-of-way, lane use and passing, turning and parking, speed and following distance, hazardous conditions, sharing the road, impaired and distracted riding, emergencies and collisions, and licensing responsibilities. Review missed concepts against the current Montana Motorcycle Driver Manual and the MVD motorcycle endorsement page rather than treating the practice count as an official exam specification.
