Montana Driver License Practice Questions

This Montana car practice page is built from 100 original English questions covering signs and signals, right-of-way, lane use and passing, turning and parking, speed and following distance, hazardous conditions, sharing the road, impaired and distracted driving, emergencies and collisions, and licensing responsibilities. The four-choice format and 100-question count are study tools, not a statement about the official Montana exam. Montana MVD identifies the standard non-commercial license as Class D. New drivers age 18 or older must provide the required documents and pass the written, vision, and road tests. Drivers under 18 follow Montana's graduated licensing process, with age, supervision, practice-hour, and permit-holding requirements that differ from the adult path.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Choose the Montana licensing path that matches your age

For a first Montana Class D license, the adult and teen paths are different. MVD's New Drivers 18+ page says adults must complete the written, vision, and road tests. Drivers under 18 use Montana's graduated driver licensing process. A teen who is at least 15 and has not completed approved driver education may apply for a learner permit through an exam station, while an approved driver-education participant may receive a traffic education permit as early as age 14 1/2.

02

Bring the required identity and residency documents

Montana MVD requires new driver-license applicants to document identity, Montana residency, and authorized presence. The current required-documents page explains the acceptable document categories and states that applicants do not need to show proof of their Social Security number, although they need to know the number so MVD can verify it. Teen applicants also need parental consent, and the graduated-license process calls for additional teen-specific records when advancing to the restricted-license stage.

03

Pass the required tests in the proper sequence

For new drivers age 18 or older, MVD directs applicants to schedule and pass the written test before the driving test, and the adult licensing page also lists a vision test. For the road test, the applicant must bring a current learner permit, current vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and a vehicle that is mechanically fit for testing. The Montana Driver Manual likewise describes vision, written, and road testing as the standard Class D testing path for a first license.

04

Understand the teen permit and practice requirements

A teen using a non-commercial learner permit must be supervised by a licensed parent, guardian, responsible adult, or another licensed adult authorized by that person. Before advancing to the first-year restricted license, the teen must hold the permit for at least six months plus one day and complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. The teen must then satisfy the restricted-license application and road-test requirements described by MVD.

05

Use the saved practice bank to review Class D driving topics

The saved bank contains ten questions in each of ten topics: signs and signals, right-of-way, lane use and passing, turning and parking, speed and following distance, hazardous conditions, sharing the road, impaired and distracted driving, emergencies and collisions, and licensing responsibilities. Use missed questions to identify topics to revisit in the current Montana Driver Manual. The practice bank is not an official MVD exam and should be paired with the official manual and current MVD licensing pages before testing.

First-time Montana Class D applicants, including adults and drivers under 18

Adults age 18 or older follow the adult new-driver process. documents

New Montana standard driver-license applicants

New applicants must provide the required proof of identity, Montana residency, and authorized presence. MVD states that applicants do not need to show proof of their Social Security number, but they need to know the number so it can be verified. Teen applicants also need the parental consent and other teen-specific documentation required for their graduated-license step.

tests

First-time Montana Class D applicants

A first-time Class D applicant follows the applicable vision, written, and road testing requirements. MVD's adult new-driver process requires the written test before the driving test and lists the vision test as part of the licensing process.

passing

First-time Montana Class D applicants completing the testing process

Applicants must pass the required written, vision, and road tests for the first-license path. For the driving test, MVD requires a current learner permit, current vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and a vehicle that meets the listed safety and mechanical conditions.

applicability

Montana standard non-commercial drivers and teen learner-permit holders

Montana's Class D standard driver license is the non-commercial license for vehicles under 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Drivers under 18 are subject to the graduated licensing rules, including supervised practice and a permit-holding period before advancing to the first-year restricted license.
