01Start with the Mississippi motorcycle endorsement path
Mississippi requires a motorcycle endorsement on a valid Mississippi driver's license to operate a motorcycle or motor scooter on public roads. The Driver Service Bureau states that the minimum age for a motorcycle learner's permit is 15, while the minimum age for a regular Mississippi driver's license is 16. Riders who are still working toward the underlying Class R license must also satisfy the age, permit, identity, residency, and school-document rules that apply to that license path.
02Bring the documents required for the underlying driver license
A motorcycle endorsement is added to a Mississippi driver's license, so first-time Mississippi applicants must also meet the document requirements for the underlying license. Current Class R guidance calls for a completed application, accepted identity or birth documentation, Social Security documentation, two proofs of Mississippi residency, and legal name-change records when applicable. Applicants under 18 who have not graduated generally need the applicable current school attendance documentation unless an exception applies.
03Prepare for the motorcycle knowledge and skills tests
The Driver Service Bureau says a motorcycle endorsement generally requires both a motorcycle knowledge test and a motorcycle skills road test. Applicants who successfully complete a qualifying motorcycle safety class endorsed by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators are not required to take the skills test, but they still must complete the knowledge test. The current motorcycle manual is the official study reference for safe operation, protective gear, controls, visibility, braking, curves, passengers, cargo, and group riding.
04Know the permit and helmet rules
The motorcycle learner's permit is available at age 15. Current Driver Service Bureau guidance says the permit must be held for one year or until the applicant reaches age 17, whichever occurs first. Mississippi also requires a crash helmet of the approved type whenever a person operates a motorcycle or motor scooter.
