Massachusetts CDL Class B Practice Test and Study Guide

This Massachusetts Class B CDL practice set contains 100 original multiple-choice questions from the saved mixed-module bank. It covers general knowledge, air brakes, hazardous materials, tank vehicles, passenger transport, and school bus topics. The specialty modules are conditional study areas and do not mean every Class B applicant needs every endorsement. Massachusetts Class B applicants must qualify for the appropriate Commercial Learner’s Permit, complete applicable entry-level driver training, and pass the required knowledge and skills tests. The Class B path does not require the Class A combination-vehicles exam, and the doubles/triples endorsement is not available for Class B licenses. Use this practice set alongside current RMV guidance and the March 2025 Massachusetts CDL Manual. It is an independent study resource, not official RMV exam content or a promise of the exact wording you will see on test day.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Start with the Massachusetts Class B licensing path

A Massachusetts Class B applicant first needs a Commercial Learner’s Permit for the correct class. The RMV requires the general knowledge exam for a Class B CLP; the combination-vehicles exam is specifically required for Class A, not Class B. Class B covers qualifying heavy single vehicles and certain vehicles towing no more than 10,000 pounds GVWR. Endorsements add authority for specific operations. This practice bank therefore combines the Class B core with air brakes, hazardous materials, tank, passenger, and school bus material as conditional study areas rather than universal requirements.

02

Bring the right documents and meet medical requirements

For a Massachusetts CLP, the RMV lists a Class D license valid for the permit period, proof of lawful presence, a valid Social Security number, Massachusetts residency, no driver’s license in another state, and clearance of outstanding state obligations. Applicants must meet applicable commercial medical standards and self-certify the type of commerce they operate. The CLP transaction requires an RMV Service Center appointment, even when the application is started online.

03

Know the Class B knowledge-test thresholds

Massachusetts publishes separate question counts and passing scores for CDL knowledge tests. General knowledge is 50 questions with 40 correct required in 60 minutes. If an air-brake qualification or endorsement applies, its exam is separate: air brakes requires 20 of 25, HazMat 24 of 30, and tank, passenger, and school bus each require 16 of 20. The 100-question practice bank is intentionally broader than a single official exam and must not be read as the official Class B test length or module mix.

04

Complete ELDT before the skills test when required

Entry-Level Driver Training applies to drivers obtaining a Class B CDL for the first time, subject to federal exceptions. Training must be completed through a provider registered with the FMCSA Training Provider Registry before the required Class B skills test. First-time passenger and school bus endorsements also require applicable ELDT before their skills tests, while a first-time HazMat applicant completes applicable ELDT before the H knowledge test. ELDT is therefore tied to the license or endorsement being sought, not to every module in this mixed practice bank.

05

Prepare for the modernized Massachusetts skills exam

Massachusetts uses the modernized CDL Skills Exam. A full exam covers Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and the public Road Test. Basic Control Skills uses Forward Stop, Straight-line Backing, Forward Offset Tracking, and Reverse Offset Backing. The RMV allows 30 minutes for each of the three exam segments, for 90 minutes total, and the 10-point air-brake test remains required when applicable. The road-test vehicle must represent the class and type of vehicle sought and be able to pass the required safety checks. Applicants should use the March 2025 CDL Manual listed by the RMV for current skills-test preparation.

tests

Massachusetts Class B applicants

A Class B CLP requires the general knowledge exam. Air-brake or endorsement exams are additional when applicable; the Class A combination-vehicles exam is not a Class B core test. The full CDL skills exam includes Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and the Road Test. Applicable ELDT must be completed before the Class B skills test for first-time Class B applicants unless an exception applies.

passing

Applicants taking Massachusetts CDL knowledge and skills tests

Massachusetts lists a passing score of 40 of 50 for general knowledge. Air brakes requires 20 of 25; HazMat requires 24 of 30; tank, passenger, and school bus each require 16 of 20 when applicable. Applicants taking a full CDL Skills Exam must successfully complete the required skills-test segments.

applicability

Class B applicants using this mixed-module practice bank

Class B applicants need general knowledge and a Class B road/skills test, while air-brake and endorsement testing depends on the vehicle and operation. This bank includes conditional HazMat, tank, passenger, and school bus material for broader practice. The doubles/triples endorsement is available only for Class A and is not included in this Class B bank. Applicants preparing for current skills testing should use the RMV’s March 2025 CDL Manual.
