Massachusetts Class D Car Practice Questions

This Massachusetts Class D practice page is built from 100 original English questions covering signs and signals, right-of-way, lane use, turning and parking, following distance, hazardous conditions, sharing the road, impaired and distracted driving, crashes, and licensing responsibilities. Each practice item has four answer choices and an explanation; that format and the 100-question practice count do not describe the official Massachusetts learner's permit exam. The RMV currently uses a 25-question Class D permit exam with 25 minutes allowed and requires 18 correct answers to pass. Applicants must also meet RMV eligibility, identification, vision, permit, and road-test requirements. Drivers under 18 have additional Junior Operator License education, supervised-driving, and permit restrictions. Always use current RMV instructions for your own application because eligibility and required documents can depend on your age and circumstances.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Start with the Class D learner's permit

Massachusetts requires a Class D learner's permit applicant to be at least 16, be a Massachusetts resident, avoid holding an active license or permit in another state, clear outstanding state obligations, and meet the applicable medical standards. The application starts online and is followed by an appointment where the RMV processes required identification documentation. Applicants under 18 also need the RMV's required written consent from an authorized adult or institution.

02

Prepare documents and vision eligibility

Bring the identification documentation the RMV requires for your specific application rather than relying on a generic list from a practice site. At the permit application, the RMV also requires a vision screening. Current Class D vision standards include at least 20/40 distant acuity in either eye, at least 120 degrees of combined horizontal peripheral vision, the ability to distinguish red, green, and amber, and no unresolvable diplopia, subject to the RMV's detailed medical rules.

03

Know the official permit exam format

The current Class D learner's permit knowledge exam contains 25 questions, provides 25 minutes, and requires 18 correct answers. RMV says the exam covers rules of the road, consequences of drug or alcohol impairment, Junior Operator Law, visually impaired road users, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The 100 questions on this page are independent practice material, so their count and four-choice format should not be treated as the official exam format.

04

Practice legally with the learner's permit

A permit holder practicing on public roads must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21, has at least one year of driving experience, and sits beside the permit holder. A permit holder under 18 generally may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by the qualifying parent or legal guardian specified by the RMV. Under-18 applicants must also complete the required driver-education and supervised-driving program before JOL licensing.

05

Prepare for the Class D road test

A Class D road-test applicant needs a valid learner's permit, a completed road-test application, a qualified sponsor, and an acceptable vehicle unless the test is arranged through a driving school under the RMV rules. The sponsor must be at least 21, have at least one year of driving experience, and hold a valid qualifying license. Applicants under 18 must complete all JOL requirements before becoming eligible for the road test.

tests

Class D learner's permit and driver's license applicants

The learner's permit process includes a vision screening and a Class D knowledge exam. After receiving a Class D learner's permit, an applicant must take and pass a Class D road test to obtain the driver's license; applicants under 18 must also satisfy JOL requirements before the road test.

passing

Class D learner's permit exam applicants

The current Class D learner's permit exam has 25 questions, allows 25 minutes, and requires 18 correct answers to pass. Passing the permit exam does not by itself issue a driver's license; a required road test and other applicable requirements still remain.

applicability

Massachusetts Class D applicants, including applicants under and over age 18

The Class D learner's permit applicant must be a Massachusetts resident, must not hold a driver's license or learner's permit in another state, must clear outstanding state obligations, and must meet Class D medical standards.
