Kentucky Class A CDL Practice Questions

This Kentucky Class A CDL practice page is built around the 100-question bank saved for this run. It covers general commercial-driving knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicles, hazardous materials, tank vehicles, and doubles/triples, including braking systems, cargo management, coupling, inspection, hazardous conditions, operating rules, and licensing responsibilities. The specialty modules are conditional rather than tests every Class A applicant automatically takes. Kentucky applicants should match knowledge tests and endorsements to the vehicle, cargo, brake system, and work they plan to perform. First-time Class A applicants must also complete the commercial learner permit process, hold the CLP at least 14 days, complete applicable Entry-Level Driver Training, satisfy medical and self-certification requirements, and pass the Kentucky CDL skills test.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Confirm that Kentucky Class A matches the combination you plan to drive

Kentucky defines Class A as a combination with a gross combination weight rating of at least 26,001 pounds when the towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds GVWR. The state manual also distinguishes endorsement privileges from the basic Class A classification. This mixed bank therefore includes tanker, hazardous-materials, and doubles/triples material for broader practice, but those subjects become required only when the intended vehicle, cargo, or trailer configuration calls for the corresponding endorsement. Applicants should use the actual ratings and planned operation—not the fact that a vehicle is used commercially—to identify the proper class and tests.

02

Prepare for Kentucky knowledge testing and the CLP process

Kentucky's CDL manual says the General Knowledge test has 50 questions and Class A applicants also face a 20-question Combination Vehicles test. Applicants who will operate air-brake-equipped vehicles take the Air Brakes test, while tanker, hazardous-materials, doubles/triples, passenger, and school-bus tests are endorsement-specific. Kentucky requires 80 percent correct on each knowledge test. After passing the required knowledge and vision tests, the applicant receives a CLP and must hold it for at least 14 days before the skills test. A qualified CDL holder must supervise practice on public roads.

03

Complete ELDT, medical, and application requirements

Kentucky requires first-time Class A applicants, first-time Class B applicants, and drivers upgrading from Class B to Class A to complete Entry-Level Driver Training when the federal rule applies. Training must come from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before the skills test. Before testing, Kentucky also requires CDL paperwork through a Driver Licensing Regional Office, including self-certification and the applicable medical process. As of June 8, 2026, Medical Examiners submit medical certificates directly to FMCSA National Registry II rather than drivers giving Kentucky paper certificates.

04

Use the correct vehicle and understand the Kentucky skills test

Kentucky requires the CDL skills test to be completed in the same class of vehicle the applicant intends to operate. The applicant must provide the test vehicle and be accompanied by a licensed driver qualified for that vehicle. The skills test includes a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and road driving. Equipment used for testing can affect restrictions: for example, a driver who wants air-brake privileges must demonstrate the required air-brake knowledge and test in appropriate equipment. Practice questions can reinforce rules and procedures, but they do not replace supervised driving, ELDT, vehicle-specific practice, or the state skills examination.
