Indiana Motorcycle Practice Questions and Permit Guide

This Indiana motorcycle practice set contains 100 English multiple-choice questions drawn from the saved bank, with four answer options and one correct answer per question. The questions cover traffic rules as well as motorcycle-specific skills such as protective gear, controls, visibility, riding techniques, passengers and cargo, and group riding. The set is designed for study and does not represent the number, wording, or format of an official Indiana examination. Indiana offers more than one path to a motorcycle endorsement, including an approved Ride Safe Indiana safety course and a learner-permit-plus-skills-test route. Applicants should confirm which path and age requirements apply to them before visiting a BMV branch or scheduling training or testing.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Choose the endorsement path that fits your situation

Indiana offers two main routes to a motorcycle endorsement. One route is an approved Ride Safe Indiana safety course; the state says applicants on that route must be at least 16, hold a valid Indiana driver’s license, and complete the course requirements. The other route uses a motorcycle learner’s permit followed by an approved motorcycle skills exam and generally requires the applicant to be at least 16 years and 270 days old. The BMV also requires a vision screening or accepted vision documentation, and applicants under 18 need a parent or guardian to sign an Agreement of Financial Liability.

02

Get and use a motorcycle learner permit correctly

A motorcycle learner’s permit is available to Indiana residents who already hold a valid Indiana driver’s license. To obtain the permit, the applicant must pass a motorcycle knowledge test based on the Motorcycle Operator’s Manual; a vision screening is also required, and a parent or guardian must sign the financial-liability agreement for an applicant under 18. While riding with the permit, the rider must use a U.S. DOT-approved helmet, ride only during the permitted daylight period, and may not carry passengers. The permit remains valid for one year, so study and testing plans should account for that validity period.

03

Prepare for the motorcycle skills route

For the permit-and-skills route, a valid motorcycle learner’s permit is required before taking the riding skills exam. The rider must provide the motorcycle used for the test and wear a motorcycle helmet. Indiana’s skills test evaluates basic control and hazard-response abilities, including starting, turning, braking, cone weaving, a left U-turn, a quick stop, and an obstacle swerve. After passing, the applicant takes the signed and stamped motorcycle permit to a BMV branch to receive the endorsement. If the skills test is failed, the state requires a waiting period before another attempt, with a longer delay after three failures.

04

Use the practice bank as a study aid

Use this practice bank to review both general road rules and the motorcycle-specific topics represented in the saved questions. Because the bank includes 100 questions across 16 topic areas, it can help identify weak areas before the official knowledge test or a training course. It should not be treated as an official test blueprint or as proof that every applicant follows the same endorsement path. Check the current BMV and Ride Safe Indiana instructions before applying, especially if you are under 18, your driver’s license status has changed, or you plan to use the learner-permit and skills-exam route.

REQUIREMENTS OVERVIEW

Indiana Motorcycle requirements

Requirements depend on the applicant and can change. Verify each item with the cited agency.

age

Indiana residents seeking a motorcycle endorsement

Indiana provides an endorsement route beginning at age 16 for applicants who successfully complete approved driver education and an authorized Ride Safe Indiana motorcycle safety course. The learner-permit and motorcycle-skills route is available beginning at age 16 years and 270 days.

documents

Motorcycle learner-permit applicants and permit holders using the skills-test route

A motorcycle learner-permit applicant must hold a valid Indiana driver’s license, and an applicant under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign an Agreement of Financial Liability. For the skills-test route, the rider must hold a valid motorcycle learner’s permit and, after passing, take the signed and stamped permit to a BMV branch for the endorsement.

tests

Applicants using either Indiana motorcycle endorsement path

The learner-permit route requires a motorcycle knowledge exam based on the Motorcycle Operator’s Manual and a vision screening before the permit, followed by a motorcycle skills exam with an approved provider. The authorized Ride Safe Indiana course route includes a final knowledge exam and skills evaluation.

passing

Applicants completing an authorized course or motorcycle skills exam

For the Ride Safe Indiana course route, the applicant must pass the course knowledge exam and skills evaluation. For the permit-and-skills route, the applicant must pass the motorcycle skills exam and submit the signed and stamped permit to the BMV. A failed skills exam requires a wait until the next business day before another attempt, and three failures require a two-month wait.

applicability

Indiana residents operating motorcycles on public roads, including learner-permit holders

To operate a motorcycle on an Indiana public roadway, a rider must have a valid Indiana driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement or a valid motorcycle learner’s permit. A person is not eligible for a permit or endorsement while driving privileges are revoked, suspended, or invalidated. Learner-permit riders must wear a U.S. DOT-approved helmet, ride only during the allowed daylight period, and carry no passengers.
