Illinois Class D Driver License Practice Questions

This Illinois Class D practice page is built from the 100-question bank currently saved for this run. It covers signs and signals, right-of-way, lane use and passing, turning and parking, speed and following distance, hazardous conditions, sharing the road, impaired and distracted driving, emergencies, and licensing responsibilities. The practice set is not an official Illinois exam, and its 100-question format does not represent the state knowledge test. Illinois uses age-specific licensing rules: teens enter the graduated driver licensing process, while certain first-time applicants ages 18 through 20 must complete a six-hour adult driver education course. Applicants must also provide the required identification and pass the examinations that apply to their situation. Use the Illinois Secretary of State and current Illinois administrative-rule sources below for current licensing requirements.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Prepare the documents for a first Illinois license

A first-time applicant for a standard Illinois driver license must document date of birth, Social Security number, Illinois residency, and written signature using acceptable documents. The Secretary of State document pages explain which Group A, B, C, and D records may be used and state that photocopies are not accepted. Applicants seeking REAL ID have additional identity and residency requirements, so the standard-license checklist should not be confused with the REAL ID checklist. Teen applicants also need the items required by the graduated licensing process, such as the instruction permit and properly documented supervised practice when applying before age 18.

02

Follow the testing sequence that applies to you

Illinois requires applicants to pass the examinations that apply to the credential and situation. Instruction-permit applicants must pass the vision screening and applicable written exam. The Secretary of State driver-license application page lists vision, written, and driving exams as the possible required examinations, and the current Rules of the Road states that a new driver must take a driving exam. The written Class D test uses traffic-law and traffic-control knowledge; the road exam evaluates practical vehicle control and lawful driving. Bring a properly equipped vehicle and proof of vehicle insurance when a driving exam is required.

03

Know the Class D written-test passing standard

Current Illinois administrative rules require a Class D written test with a minimum of 35 questions and require at least 80 percent of the questions to be answered correctly for eligibility for a Class D license. The Rules of the Road also explains the subjects and exam process but does not make this practice bank an official test. Treat the 100 questions here as study material across the saved bank topics, not as a prediction of the exact questions you will receive. Applicants who must take a driving exam must also successfully complete that separate practical examination.

04

Apply the age-specific GDL and adult-education rules

Illinois teens begin the permit phase at age 15 with parent or guardian consent, enrollment in approved driver education, and vision and written testing. For ages 15 through 17, the permit must be held for at least nine months, and the teen must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, before initial licensing. The initial licensing phase covers ages 16 and 17 and includes additional consent and driver-education requirements. For applicants ages 18 through 20, no GDL age restrictions apply, but a first-time applicant who never completed qualifying driver education must successfully complete the six-hour Adult Driver Education Course before obtaining a license.
