Idaho Motorcycle Practice Questions

This Idaho motorcycle practice page is based on the 100-question bank saved for this run and the Idaho Transportation Department's July 2026 Motorcycle Rider's Handbook. It covers protective gear, motorcycle controls, visibility, lane position, braking and turning, passengers and cargo, group riding, hazards, emergencies, and licensing responsibilities. Idaho generally requires a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle (M) endorsement to operate a motorcycle on public roads, while a motorcycle instruction permit can be used temporarily under specific restrictions. Applicants under 21 must complete an approved motorcycle rider training course, and riders under 18 must wear a DOT-compliant helmet. The current ITD endorsement page and handbook should be checked before testing because fees, forms, examiner availability, and administrative procedures can change.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Know when an Idaho motorcycle endorsement is required

Idaho requires a motorcycle (M) endorsement on a valid driver’s license to legally operate a motorcycle on public roads. The current handbook also describes motor-driven cycles and certain three-wheel vehicles that require motorcycle licensing. A motorcycle instruction permit is a temporary practice credential, not a permanent substitute for the endorsement.

02

Pass the knowledge test and complete the required skills path

ITD requires the motorcycle knowledge test to purchase an instruction permit, to add the motorcycle endorsement, and to transfer an out-of-state motorcycle endorsement. A motorcycle skills test is normally required to add the endorsement. A qualifying Idaho STAR or other accepted MSF course can waive the skills test when the course proof meets ITD's current time limit. ITD states that motorcycle knowledge and skills test results are valid for up to one year.

03

Follow the instruction-permit restrictions

The July 2026 handbook says an Idaho motorcycle instruction permit is available to a person who already holds a valid Idaho driver’s license and is valid for 180 days. The permit requires a passed motorcycle knowledge test and allows practice only during daylight, with no freeway riding and no passengers. A permit holder under 18 must also comply with Idaho's helmet requirement.

04

Apply the age-based training and helmet rules correctly

Applicants under age 21 must successfully complete an approved motorcycle rider training course in addition to the knowledge-test requirement. Idaho law requires every person under 18 to wear a DOT-compliant protective helmet while riding a motorcycle or ATV on or off highway. ITD recommends proper protective gear for all riders even when a particular item is not required solely by age.
