01Confirm that Class B matches the vehicle
Georgia DDS defines Class B as a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or such a vehicle towing another vehicle that does not exceed 10,000 pounds GVWR. Class B includes Class C vehicles but not Class A combinations. Georgia also requires a valid regular Georgia driver license before the Class B CDL process. Vehicle weight ratings determine the class, while endorsements and restrictions separately control special operations such as passenger service, school buses, tank vehicles, and hazardous materials.
02Complete the BP permit and document steps first
A first-time Georgia Class B applicant uses a Class BP commercial learner permit before the full CDL. Applicants must be at least 18; drivers ages 18 through 20 are restricted to Georgia-only commercial driving until the restriction is removed at or after age 21. Georgia requires the CLP to be held at least 14 days before the skills test, and a qualifying CLP issued on or after July 1, 2021 is valid for 365 days. Applicants also must satisfy identity, residency, lawful-status, vision, and medical or self-certification requirements that apply to their transaction and type of commercial operation.
03Sequence knowledge, ELDT, and skills testing
Class B applicants take the CDL knowledge tests that match the class and equipment. General knowledge is core study, and air-brake knowledge applies when the vehicle uses air brakes. Federal entry-level driver training applies to drivers obtaining a Class B CDL for the first time unless an exception applies; required training must be completed through a registered provider before the applicable skills test. Georgia now uses the modernized three-part skills process: Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and Road Test, in a vehicle representative of the license sought.
04Treat endorsement topics as conditional
This mixed bank includes tanker, hazardous-materials, passenger, and school-bus questions so one Class B bank can cover a broad study range. These modules are not a list of endorsements every driver must obtain. Georgia DDS separately identifies the tests for each privilege: tanker N requires a knowledge test and is valid for Class A or B; passenger P and school-bus S require knowledge and skills tests; hazardous-materials H requires a knowledge test plus security-screening requirements and is not available on a CLP. Double/triple T is Class A only, which is why that module is not part of routine Class B coverage here.
05Use the 100 questions as a study map
The saved bank contains 100 questions: 38 general-knowledge questions, 13 air-brake questions, 13 hazardous-materials questions, and 12 each for tank vehicles, passenger transport, and school buses. The actual topics span vehicle inspection, cargo management, following distance, hazardous conditions, brake systems, tank dynamics, passenger safety, hazardous materials, commercial operating rules, and licensing responsibilities. Federal standards require at least 80 percent correct on each CDL knowledge test and successful performance of the required skills. ELDT theory also uses an 80 percent minimum assessment score, but that training assessment is separate from the state CDL knowledge tests.
