Colorado Class B CDL Practice Questions and Study Guide

Colorado current CLP guidance requires an applicant to be at least 18 years old to obtain a commercial learner permit. Separate federal operating or endorsement restrictions can apply to younger commercial drivers, so applicants should verify the privileges associated with the work they intend to perform.

For the CLP process, Colorado lists possession of a valid regular driver license and provision of a current DOT medical card. Commercial drivers must also self-certify their expected commercial operation, and the medical certificate, variance, or waiver documentation required depends on that operating category.

Applicants must pass the CDL knowledge tests that apply to Class B, the vehicle equipment, and any endorsements sought, then pass the required CDL skills test. Colorado describes the skills test as vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. A CLP must be held at least 14 days before skills testing, and applicants subject to federal ELDT must complete the applicable registered-provider training before the relevant skills test.

Federal CDL testing standards require applicants to answer at least 80 percent of the questions correctly on each required general or endorsement knowledge test. To pass the skills test, the applicant must successfully perform the required skills in a representative vehicle.

Class B identifies the qualifying heavy single-vehicle class and certain limited towing configurations. Air brakes, hazardous materials, tank vehicles, passenger vehicles, and school buses have separate equipment, endorsement, or operating conditions, so this mixed bank intentionally includes modules that are not required of every Colorado Class B applicant. Combination vehicles and doubles or triples are not treated as routine Class B modules in this bank.
