01Choose the permit path for your age
For applications submitted before January 1, 2027, Colorado's current minor-permit system uses age-based prerequisites. The DMV handbook describes permits beginning at age 15 with approved driver education, at age 15 years 6 months with approved driver education or a four-hour driver awareness program, and at age 16 for otherwise qualified applicants without those prequalification courses. Drivers under 18 generally must hold an instruction permit for at least 12 months before licensing and document at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. HB24-1021 changes education requirements for applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027, so applicants near that date should recheck DMV guidance.
02Prepare the right identity and address documents
Document requirements depend on the credential and the applicant's status, so use the current Colorado DMV checklist that matches your situation. For U.S. citizens and permanent residents, form DR 2300A lists acceptable identity documents and requires two documents showing the applicant's name and current Colorado residential street address. The residential documents must be dated within one year. If identity documents show different names, certified name-change records may also be required. Review the checklist before the appointment rather than relying on a generic document list, because the exact combination can vary by applicant.
03Study for the knowledge test and prepare for the drive test
The Colorado Driver Handbook says the written knowledge test covers driving knowledge and safety, including road signs, impaired driving, driving rules, safety rules, and legal topics. Colorado DMV Rule 8 requires a score of 80 percent or higher to pass the Basic Operator Skills Written Knowledge Test. Passing the written test makes an applicant eligible for an instruction permit when the other permit requirements are satisfied. The driving skills test evaluates practical safe driving, including observation, vehicle control, lane use, and compliance with traffic laws, signs, and signals. 04Use the 100-question bank as a study tool
Work through all 100 questions, then revisit the topics where you miss answers. The bank spreads practice across ten areas: signs and signals, right-of-way, lane use and passing, turning and parking, speed and following distance, hazardous conditions, sharing the road, impaired and distracted driving, emergencies and collisions, and licensing responsibilities. Read each explanation instead of memorizing answer positions. When a practice explanation and a current official source appear to differ, follow the current official source. Before your DMV visit, recheck the handbook and permit requirements, particularly because the education rules change for applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027.
