California Class B CDL Practice Questions

This California Class B CDL practice page is built from 100 original English questions in the current saved bank. The questions span general knowledge, air brakes, hazardous materials, tank vehicles, passenger vehicles, and school buses. That mix is a study collection, not a statement that every Class B applicant must take every endorsement or air-brake test. California requires applicants to qualify for the commercial class and any endorsements or restrictions that apply to the vehicle and work they intend to perform. Use the practice set alongside the current California DMV commercial licensing instructions and handbook. Applicants should also check federal Entry-Level Driver Training requirements because first-time Class B applicants generally must complete ELDT before the skills test, subject to federal exceptions.

LICENSING GUIDE

What to know before you test

Use this overview together with the latest official guidance linked below.

01

Start with eligibility and the commercial learner permit

California says a commercial applicant must be at least 18 and must already hold a California noncommercial Class C driver license before receiving a commercial learner permit. Applicants age 18 through 20 are limited to qualifying intrastate commercial work; age 21 is required for interstate commercial operation and for transporting hazardous materials or wastes. For a CLP, complete the CDL application, provide the required medical, identity, and any applicable driving-history or residency documents, then pass the required knowledge tests.

02

Match the license class and endorsements to the vehicle

A California Commercial Class B license covers a single vehicle with a GVWR over 26,000 pounds, such a vehicle towing another vehicle not over 10,000 pounds GVWR, or a three-axle vehicle weighing over 6,000 pounds. Endorsements are separate from the license class, so hazardous materials, passenger, school bus, and tank topics apply only when the operation requires them. Air-brake knowledge also depends on the vehicle's braking system and restrictions. Commercial drivers self-certify their operating category, and California distinguishes interstate from intrastate operation when applying restrictions and medical rules.

03

Complete required training before the skills test

Federal ELDT rules apply to most first-time Class B applicants and to certain first-time endorsements, unless a federal exception applies. Training must be completed through a provider listed on the federal Training Provider Registry. California also requires residents applying for an original Class A or B CDL to complete at least 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training and submit the DL 1236 certification before CDL issuance. Plan training early so the completion record is available before the test stage that requires it.

04

Pass the required tests and finish the application on time

After the required knowledge tests are passed, California issues the CLP. A CLP must generally be held for at least 14 days before the skills test. The skills test includes vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and a road test. California allows three attempts for each required knowledge test and three tries for the skills test; a failed skills-test component postpones the remaining testing. The CDL application and fee are valid for 12 months, so all required knowledge and skills testing must be completed before the application expires.
